Learning and Thinking Differences
As of this writing, the majority of states have passed some degree of dyslexia legislation, according to the National Center of Improving Literacy. Only three states have no legislation in the books (Hawaii, South Dakota and Idaho). Legislation ranges from: screenings, services and interventions. If you feel something is wrong and your child struggles with reading, take action. Investigate. Research. Talk to your child and his teacher.
If the answer is, “lots of children have problems with reading, let’s wait and see.” Don’t wait.

Today I had a 25 year veteran teacher tell me about the guilt she feels by how she taught reading all these years, by “whole word.”
This guilt is driving her to learn about how the brain works and change her way of teaching reading. The seeds have been planted and I can see the tremendous impact she’ll make in the future.

In our public school system, when parents suspect dyslexia, teachers are often instructed to refer them to their pediatrician. Unknowing parents take this advice and may wait till the well check up.
